404 only when the DID appears nowhere — neither with a DBA nor anywhere in the CF graph. See the tag note on why a missing DBA is not absence.

Accepts did:xny:<uuid>, did:xny:<decimal>, bare <uuid> or bare <decimal>. Percent-encoded forms work too — the handler unescapes first, so did%3Axny%3A... from encodeURIComponent resolves correctly.
